BEDFORD U3A GARDEN GROUP NOVEMBER 2009
(Click Eve's Farewell  above for photos)

This is my last meeting as Group Leader though I shall remain a member. Your new leaders are Ann and Jeff Goodlad and Carol Hipwood (stand up and take a bow, please). I know they have lots of plans for the months ahead and I am sure you will all continue to give them your support.

I have enjoyed being a Group Leader as you have all enjoyed being in the Gardening Group as demonstrated by your continuing support over the years.

I know I have learned a lot from you all so at least now when I kill off a plant I have a better idea of why I have done it. Apart from our monthly meetings we have had some good days out and seen some lovely gardens. I don’t think any of this will change significantly.

There is one thing I have never been able to do as Group Leader and that is find a way of stopping you all talking to each other. I have never been sure that you are actually talking about gardening. In future I will be able to take part in these conversations and though I would not admit I do enjoy a nice bit of gossip.

I have the menu for the Christmas lunch and remind you that it is on Friday December 12th at the Horse and Jockey, Ravensden and the time is 12noon for 12.30. I once sent a letter to a client offering him a 10 o’clock appointment and he complained bitterly that when he arrived at the office at 10pm there was no one there. It taught me a lesson - I don’t know about him. (I digress) The price of the meal includes coffee and that means that if you are having two course you will have to pay £10 on the day. We do get a discount being a group and I will use that to cover the tip.

I have made a compilation of some photos of our visits over the years and provided I can get the machine to work we can look at those today. Some of the photos are not of the group but I am not sufficiently computer literate to separate them out without a lot of time and quite a few tears and tantrums.

Four of our long standing members have left the group recently. Margaret Perry, Peggy Sutton, June Kirkham and Valerie Osborne all have conflicting activities. That is the trouble with the U3A these days; there is so much going on.

Not much to say about the garden this month. Thank goodness we have had some rain at last and everything has perked up as a consequence. It has made the grass grow again but mowing the lawn is as good a way as any of picking up fallen leaves. I have just found my bulbs tucked away in a cupboard; maybe the ground is soft enough to plant them at last. The wall flowers are in bloom which worries me a little. What I don’t understand is how I have managed to spend so much money in the Garden Centre. The man a Milton Ernest greets me like a long lost member of his family.

Group meetings will continue to be here at Putnoe Heights. The Group will not meet in January - the first Friday actually fall on January 1st.

Next meeting Friday February 5th at 2pm.
